How to Verify a Certified Organic Product

Not everything labelled 'organic' is certified organic. This guide explains what genuine certification looks like, which bodies issue it, how to cross-check a claim online, and what warning signs to watch for.

Step-by-Step Verification Guide

Follow these steps each time you want to confirm a product is genuinely certified organic before you buy.

01

Look for a recognised certification logo on the pack

Genuine certified organic products carry the logo of an accredited certification body — such as the EU Organic leaf, the USDA Organic seal, or the JAS mark. The logo must be clearly printed on the label, not just mentioned in marketing text.

02

Find the certifier's name and certificate number

Alongside the logo, the label should state the name of the certification body and, in many cases, a certificate or operator code. This code is what allows you to cross-check the claim against the certifier's public database.

03

Cross-check the certificate online

Most major certification bodies maintain a public operator database. Search for the producer or brand name, or enter the certificate number directly. Confirm the certificate is current, covers the product category, and matches the country of origin on the label.

04

Check the country of origin matches the certification scope

A certificate issued in one country does not automatically cover products grown or processed in another. Verify that the certification scope includes the specific product and the country where it was produced.

05

When in doubt, ask the retailer

A retailer stocking certified organic products should be able to provide documentation on request. If they cannot, that is itself a signal worth noting.

Recognised Certification Bodies

These are the principal organic certification standards and bodies whose marks you may encounter on products sold in Dubai.

EU Organic

European Union

The EU organic logo (the green leaf) is mandatory on all pre-packaged EU-produced organic food. Products must meet EU Regulation 2018/848. The certifier name and EU code appear alongside the logo.

USDA Organic

United States

The USDA Organic seal indicates the product meets US National Organic Program (NOP) standards. Products must be at least 95% organic ingredients. Certifiers are accredited by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service.

JAS Organic

Japan

The Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) organic mark is issued by MAFF-accredited certification bodies. It covers agricultural products, processed foods and livestock. The certifier code appears on the label.

Common Red Flags

These are signs that an 'organic' claim may not be backed by genuine certification.

No certification logo — only text

The words 'organic', 'natural', 'eco' or 'bio' in the product name or description carry no legal weight without an accredited certification mark. Text alone is not verification.

Unknown or unverifiable certifier

If the certification body named on the label does not appear in any public accreditation register, the claim cannot be independently verified. Search for the certifier name before trusting the claim.

Certificate number missing or invalid

Legitimate certified products can be traced to a specific certificate. If no code is present, or the code returns no result in the certifier's database, treat the claim with caution.

Certification scope does not match the product

A certificate may cover a producer's grain crops but not their processed products, or their farm in one country but not a processing facility in another. Always check the scope matches what you are buying.

Expired certification

Organic certificates must be renewed annually. A product may have been certified in a previous year but the certificate has since lapsed. Always check the validity dates in the certifier's database.

Price significantly below market rate

Genuine certified organic production carries real costs — certification fees, compliance, lower yields. Products priced far below comparable certified organic products warrant additional scrutiny.
